To celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year, Pobjoy
Mint has issued a unique coin which incorporates some of the old Chinese
traditions to bring luck. February 8th 2016 sees the start of the Lunar Year of
the Monkey which has been celebrated since 2600BC and it’s based on the cycles
of the moon.
The design on the coin shows an intrepid
monkey walking along a branch surrounded by cherry blossom, which is considered
one of the most popular flowers as a symbol of good luck. The obverse of each
coin features the new effigy design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.
The original shape of the coin is what
gives its unique appeal as it has been produced in the shape of a Chinese lock
charm. This type of charm is based on the traditional Chinese device used to
safeguard possessions and property and its main purpose is to protect a person
from evil and to bring good luck, fortune, official rank and long life.
The Chinese New Year can fall anywhere between
late January and the middle of February where these lock charms are usually
presented to family and loved ones and placed under pillows at the time of the
Lunar New Year.
